EMMA KIRKBY and JAMES LISNEY

Kirkby

We were truly delighted when our Vice President Emma Kirkby was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire last year and we are very glad to welcome her back to Lewes.

Emma performs throughout the world, appearing with an ever-widening circle of orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music, London Baroque, the Age of Enlightenment, Freiburger Barock, Tafelmusik and Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montreal. In addition to her solo work and her partnerships with Anthony Rooley,Jakob Lindberg and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, she is renowned for her role in the Consort of Musicke.

In recent years, she has formed a partnership with James Lisney and together they have performed throughout Europe and America.

JAMES LISNEY, piano, PAUL BARRITT, violin and JOSEPHINE HORDER. Cello.

James Lisney sustains an exciting and varied international career, achieving distinction both for his work as a soloist and for his collaborative work with many major artists. His distinctive quality was already noted at his highly acclaimed Wigmore Hall 'debut' in 1986:

James received further endorsement in 1988 when he was selected by the Young Concert Artist Trust. Since then, he has worked with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, the Enesco Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra and the European Community Chamber Orchestra and inclusion in many prestigious recital series and festivals.

Paul Barritt was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He studied with Jaroslav Vanecek at the Royal College of Music in London and subsequently with Orrea Pernel, Sandor Végh and Salvatore Accardo.

He is Leader of the English Chamber Orchestra as well as the chamber ensemble Divertimenti. He led The Northern Sinfonia from 1988 to 1994. In 1980 he was a winner of the Greater London Arts Association's 'Young Musician of the Year' award and was chosen to take part in the Park Lane Group's '20th-Century and Young Artists' series at London's South Bank. He gave a Wigmore Hall recital debut in 1985 which was followed by recordings and live relays for BBC Radio 3 and the premiere recording of Miklos Rozsa's solo sonata. Since then he has emerged as one of Britain's most sought-after violinists in the solo and chamber music field.

Horder

Josephine Horder studied the cello with Joan Dickson in London, Antonio Janigro in Salzburg and Johannes Goritzki in Dusseldorf. She also studied chamber music under Sándor Végh. Early in her freelance career she was principal cellist with the Kent Opera Orchestra and was a founder member of the Divertimenti Ensemble, the Schubert Ensemble and the George Caird oboe quartet. More recently Josephine was a member of the Adriano String Quartet, which was resident at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
