Divertimenti

                                    The String Quintet from Divertimenti

Welcome to our forty-sixth season, where once again we have some truly wonderful concerts in store for you.

We start on October 24 with a string quintet from Divertimenti, a group familiar to Radio 3 listeners. The presence of two cellists means that their programme can end with a performance of Schubert's great Quintet in C. This musical treat is not to be missed.

It is followed on November 28 with a visit from our ever-popular vice-president Dame Emma Kirkby. Backed up by some distinguished fellow artists, her programme consists of music by Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart. But be warned: members of the Society always have first choice of seats until 7.35, when we then for the last ten minutes offer anything left to those already queuing. Last time Dame Emma visited us there was scarcely a spare seat to be had, so for those of you who have not already done so why not join as a member this year? You can always loan your season ticket to someone else if you have to miss a concert, and the more members we get the easier the Society can plan ahead.

The New Year starts with a visit on January 23 by the Barbirolli Quartet. Sponsored by the invaluable Countess of Munster Trust, whose 50th anniversary falls this year, these brilliant young musicians will play music by Mozart, Beethoven and Ravel plus a quartet by Emily Hall, a talented young composer and daughter of one-time committee member Stephen Hall.

They are followed on February 27 by the celebrated Olivier Ensemble, whose programme includes Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale Suite arranged for clarinet, violin and piano.

Finally, on March 27, the London Concertante, one of the finest chamber ensembles in Europe, plays music for strings and piano by Mahler and Mendelssohn, finishing as we began with another work by Schubert, his famous Trout Quintet. Attendance here is expected once again to be very high.

Those of you living in Lewes may like to know that Octave Recorded Music Specialists will still be offering their special discount to Society members while also planning to stock CDs of much of the music that will be played in the coming season.

As always I would like to thank the committee, stewards and those many other people who have worked so hard for the society over the years. Many thanks too to our members and supporters who continue to provide the loyal backing that enables us to continue offering chamber music concerts of such a consistently high standard.

Chairman
