The Nicholas Yonge Society

About the society

The Nicholas Yonge Society is one of the finest mainstream classical music societies in the South-East of England. The exceptional quality of its concerts and their excellent value for money, attracts members from far and wide. Over a quarter of the members come from places outside Lewes, such as Horsham, Worthing, Eastbourne and Hailsham. The Society favours trios, quartets and small ensembles, with an occasional piano solo or singer, performed by artists of international fame. In recent years, these have included the Octuor Paris-Bastille, the Schubert Ensemble, the Takacs Quartet, the Belcea Quartet, the Ysaye Quartet, the Vanbrugh Quartet, the Skampa Quartet, the Florestan Trio, pianists Steven Osborne and Leon McCawley and the bass Sir John Tomlinson.

In addition to mounting excellent concerts, the Society aims to provide a platform for young professional musicians and it is gratifying that so many of these have gone on to successful national and international careers.

The concerts are held at the Sussex Downs College in Lewes, normally on the fourth Friday of October, November, January, February and March at 7.45 pm.
